- How do I confirm a provider is qualified for my procedure?
- Look for board certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member board. The Texas Medical Board's public lookup will show licensing status and any disciplinary history. For surgical procedures, also confirm hospital privileges and that the facility is accredited (AAAASF, AAAHC, or Joint Commission).
- How far in advance should I book an elective procedure consult?
- Most DFW providers can book a consult within 2 to 4 weeks. Higher-demand specialties (top cosmetic surgeons, popular orthopedic groups) may book 6 to 8 weeks out. Surgery itself is usually scheduled 4 to 12 weeks after the consult, depending on pre-op clearance.
- Will my insurance cover this?
- It depends on the procedure and your plan. Cosmetic procedures (rhinoplasty, liposuction, breast augmentation, etc.) are typically cash-pay. Functional procedures (cataract surgery, knee replacement, sinus surgery, bariatric surgery) are often covered when medically indicated. The provider's office will verify insurance and run a pre-authorization before scheduling.
- What questions should I ask at the consult?
- Ask how many of this exact procedure the surgeon has performed in the past year, their complication rate, their revision or touch-up policy, who administers anesthesia, where complications would be treated if they occurred, and what the total written cost includes.
